Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear 2B Families,

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving! We had a great (and short) two day week in 2B! Mr. Dombrowski and I have been busily preparing our home to host Thanksgiving again this year! Twenty wonderful family members plus 3 kids! We're so excited to spend this time with our family. My best friend and her husband are also in town from Michigan so we can't wait to spend the holiday with them. We'll also be going to the ASU/U of A Football game on Saturday! Go Devils!

We enjoyed a performance from the Phoenix Symphony yesterday! It was beautiful! They treated us to so many wonderful compositions from The Nutcracker, to Sleeping Beauty, and even Swan Lake.

 

Did you know that we practice typing every Monday afternoon? We've been working hard on our "home row" typing skills. No more pecking keys! Here are a few amazing home row scholars!

Next week in 2B...

Literature: We will read Chapters 10 & 11 of The Boxcar Children. Ask your child to retell you some of the important events in a sequential order. Don't forget to be working on your diorama project at home! The suggested timeline says you should have by now: A. Planned what you want it to look like on the outside and B. by December 1st choose which 5 items you want to include inside that show how they made their boxcar into a home. Here are picture examples of projects from 2015 and 2016!

Poetry: We are working so hard to memorize one stanza each of The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore.

Grammar: Our grammar experts are adding prepositions, object of the preposition, and prepositional phrases to their question and answer flow.

Writing: The excerpt next week is from Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien.

Math: We will continue solidifying our understanding of multiplication and division! 

History: This week in history, we will be finishing up our unit on Ancient China with a review on Monday and the test on Wednesday. A study guide will be sent home for your child to review. Our new unit will be Ancient Greece! On Friday we will begin by studying the geography of ancient Greece and it's surrounding areas.

Science: Next week our young entomologists will continue their study of insects through learning more about social insects ~ bees (honeybees, drones, queens), paper wasps, termites, and ants. Ask your child if they can describe the difference between a social and solitary insect. Can they describe what each bee must do in order to survive? Can they tell you how ants and termites are different from other social insects?

Another great week in 2B!

Dear 2B Families,

What a wonderful and special week we had in 2B! Your children were AMAZING at the Winter Concert! They sounded beautiful and I loved hearing them sing. Can you believe Thanksgiving is next week? We will only have two days of school! Time is FLYING!

Our Curriculum Next Week...

Literature: We will read Chapter 9: Fun in the Cherry Orchard from The Boxcar Children. Did you receive the information about The Boxcar Children diorama project? Please reach out if you have questions!

Writing: We will spend some time writing about what we are thankful for!

Math: Division and Multiplication Fact Families!

Science: Our scholars will become entomologists as we begin our study of insects. We will learn about what makes an insect an insect through learning about the parts of their body like the head, thorax, and abdomen. We will also study their life cycle. Does it go through incomplete or complete metamorphosis? Finally, our entomologists will design their very own insect!

Observing the Water Cycle in a Jar...ask me to sign you the song :-)

History: We will learn about Chinese New Year! Ask your child about the traditions Chinese people have to celebrate the New Year.

PSO Fall Festival Announcement

Fall Festival

November 18th
At Archway Arete (Football field and surrounding areas)
Time: 11:00am - 2:00pm

The Fall Festival is 1 low price Includes EVERYTHING, no extra tickets to purchase for any of the bouncy house, obstacle courses, carnival games, cotton candy or popcorn. Wrist band pre orders will go till Friday at $7.00 per ticket. The wrist bands will be $10.00 the day of the event. There will be vendors there, so some Holiday shopping can start, and a variety of food trucks will be at the event for you to purchase a snack or lunch.

We need MANY volunteers to run this event. Older children can also volunteer. The best part if you volunteer you GET IN FREE!!!

Poetry: Our next poem is a LONG one! It's "The Night Before Christmas" by Clement C. Moore. Your child will be able to choose one stanza for recitation the week of December 18th. Please see their folder on Monday for a copy of this poem.

Literature: We will continue to follow the Alden children on their journey through reading chapters 7 & 8 of The Boxcar Children. Ask your child to retell you some of the important events we've read about so far. We will also be sending home information about our next project on Monday: The Boxcar Children Diorama! Please see your child's folder on Monday for a copy of the directions, a suggested timeline, and rubric. Thank you for helping them at home!

Math: Multiplication and division concepts will continue into next week. A review test will come home on Monday evening. See if your scholar can skip count by 2s, 3s (to 30), 4s (to 40), 5s, and 10s! Do they know what the term equal groups means? We will practice related multiplication and division facts next week.

Science: We will review The Water Cycle and take a test next Thursday. A study guide will come home with your child on Tuesday. Thank you for helping your child review these important concepts from our unit. See if they can sing the water cycle song they learned in class :-).

History: Ancient China unit continued!

Read-A-Thon Pictures + Welcome November!

What a week! We celebrated Read-a-Thon Day on Tuesday and that was so much fun! Thank you to all of our parents who made this a special time for our class. All of your donations and time were very much appreciated. Here are some pictures for you to enjoy:

Next Week in 2B...

Poetry: We will recite Merry Autumn Days in class next week. Please help your child practice at home this weekend.

Literature: We will read Chapters 5 & 6 of The Boxcar Children and have a nice discussion about what treasure means to us. We are also working on reading the scripts from each chapter which has been a lot fun! The kids love being actors :-).

Spalding: 20 words only next week due to no school Friday (Spelling test will be Thursday)

Writing: Students are practicing how to answer questions in a complete sentence, restating the question in their answer. We will read and narrate (with complete sentences) an excerpt from The Borrowers by Mary Norton.

Grammar: Be sure to ask your child about our SKILL CHECK! "Period, statement, declarative sentence" and "Go back to the verb - divide - the complete subject from the complete predicate" What does it mean? - we hope they can share their new grammar knowledge with you :-) Next week we will continue classifying sentences by using our Question and Answer Flow and we will review singular and plural nouns. We will learn how to revise our builder sentences, too.

Math: We are going to continue with multiplication this week and then jump right into division beginning on Tuesday!

Science: The Water Cycle unit will continue through studying different types of clouds, run off, and groundwater.  Can you help us with Science next week by donating cotton balls and/or blue food coloring? Please e-mail me if you're able to. We'd be so appreciative!

History: We are continuing our study of China by discussing the importance of ancestors to Chinese people and how they are honored. You can talk with your children at home about their own ancestors and ways that you might honor them (cooking your great-grandmothers cookie recipe or talking about memories you have of them). We will also take a trip to The Great Wall of China! Your children will learn what a great feat it was to build the wall and they will be able to discuss the reasons it was built.
