Thank you for a wonderful first week of school and helping Mrs. Smith feel so special on her birthday! It's been a pleasure building our classroom community this week. We spent a lot of our time getting to know each other and learning the policies and procedures of a new grade. Thank you for your patience and support as we learn and grow together! Students will bring home their planner, red homework folder, and Singapore Math Workbook (unless they have a math worksheet) each night. They will bring home all of their completed work for the week in their Friday Folder. Please empty all completed work, sign the pink card stock sheet, and leave that card stock signature page in their Friday Folder all year long. Please return the Friday Folder on Mondays with all of the completed work from the week before taken out. Thank you for your help!

A Note about Pencil Grip and Posture (with credit to Ms. Spriggs):
During homework, please have your children focus on proper posture, pencil grip and letter formation. Students are taught that "clock letters" start at 2 "on the clock". We also reviewed words like midpoint and baseline. If they are returning students, they will be familiar with this information. If your child is new to Archway Arete, this might be new information that they learned this week. That is okay, they will hear a lot more about it!
I ask you to take notice of your child's handwriting habits. Later in the year, we will introduce cursive (the standard in the upper grades) and it will prove much more challenging if students are not starting their letters properly. We will continue working on this in class, however, the one-on-one environment is a great place to closely monitor and correct.

A Note from our French Teacher...
My name is Salwa Gebara. Born and raised in Lebanon, I got all my education through a French based school. I was teaching Kindergarten (10 years) French and Math while completing a BA in Child Psychology. I left Lebanon during the long civil war and went to France. I had to change careers, went to “Pigier” Techniques and graduated as Head Secretary. I worked in Paris as a Medical secretary for almost 5 years. I got married in the USA and established my life in AZ for almost 20 years now. When my children were 18 months, they went to Tutor Time and so did I. I worked for them as a care giver for 11 years. I am now at my 5th year teaching French for Great Hearts, my 2nd year at Archway Arete.
Here at Archway Arete, we are committed to providing French classes where the children are fully immersed in French. We will be using a French program called “Les loustics”. It is a fun, creative, action-oriented course full of visual and audio documents that reflect the lively world of children and gives them a zest for learning. It uses a gradual, spiral approach to reinforce learning from one lesson to the next. Each unit consists of five lessons offering a variety of activities and a glossary. 2nd Grade is going to start “Les Loustics 1” this year and I am very excited about all the work that we are going to accomplish together. I would appreciate your help in providing a spiral notebook for French. This will be their tool to repeat daily the glossary of terms learned in class. You may also use Google translate as a means of interpreting them. Google also has a pronunciation feature which can be useful at times.

PE Uniforms: Girls, please wear shorts under skirts and dresses. Shoes need to be black tennis shoes (preferred) or have a strap across the top. Ballet flats are not allowed.

Spalding/Language Arts: We will dive into spelling words! Please continue to monitor handwriting and practice phonogram cards at home, as we will also be continuing to practice at school. We will read chapters 4-7 in Charlotte's Web! The students (and teachers) are loving this book! We will have fun learning new vocab words and exploring how Wilbur is feeling lonely and what he can do about it, we will have a class discussion about friendship, and compare and contrast qualities in both Charlotte and Wilbur. Students will also distinguish main points and ideas in each chapter. We will also start in grammar, where students will review the parts of a sentence, and what nouns are!
Math: We will continue our unit on numbers to 1000. The students will identify patterns, and use the greater than and less than symbol with accuracy. We will master the hundreds chart and brainstorm real life scenarios where you can "swap" 10 ones of something for 1 ten of something else (10 pennies for 1 dime). We will have our first math quiz on Tuesday, reviewing place value. Monday night’s homework will provide wonderful practice for Tuesday’s quiz!
History: We will continue exploring maps and globes this week, comparing them as well as zooming in on land features that create Earth's beautiful landscape. Students will learn about volcanos, mountains, valleys, prairies, coasts, deserts and oases. Please review these terms at home and see if you can spot any interesting landforms in the neighborhood! Students should be able to tell you the names of their continent, country, state, and city. They should also be able to tell you directions on a map and identify the continents, major oceans, Equator, North Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, as well as the poles.
Science: Students will review the four seasons of the year. They will understand that the seasons are caused by the earth's tilt and its revolution around the sun. We will be using the globe and a flashlight to model and investigate how this works. Students will understand that each season has special characteristics. We will also explore how each season affects plants, animals, and humans.
Please note: Our classroom will be a peanut free zone!
